Case Background
A New Zealand client's construction project required tiling of kitchen and bathroom walls. These areas are subject to long-term damp conditions, which pose high demands on the adhesive performance, water resistance, and durability of the tile adhesive. Traditional cement mortar is prone to issues such as tile hollowing and detachment in such environments. As a result, the project team found us through our website. After understanding the situation, we recommended using a tile adhesive modified with redispersible polymer powder to address these issues.
Application Plan
Material Selection
We chose vinyl acetate-ethylene copolymer-based redispersible polymer powder, which offers
excellent flexibility, water resistance, and adhesive strength. Based on experimental data, the
cement content was determined to be above 35% to ensure the original strength and durability of
the tile adhesive.
Construction Process
Substrate Preparation: The wall surface was cleaned to remove dust, grease, and loose materials.
Tile Adhesive Preparation: Cement, sand, redispersible polymer powder, and other additives were mixed in proportion, and then water was added to stir until a uniform paste was formed.
Tile Laying: The prepared tile adhesive was evenly applied to the wall surface. After pressing the tiles into the adhesive layer, the tiles were rubbed to ensure full contact with the adhesive layer.

Construction Advantages
1.Enhanced Adhesive Strength: The polymer film formed by the redispersible polymer powder significantly improved the adhesive strength between the tile adhesive, tiles, and wall surface. It maintained good adhesive performance even in high-temperature or damp conditions.
2.Extended Open Time: The addition of polymer powder extended the open time of the tile adhesive, allowing construction workers more time to adjust the tile positions and avoid construction defects caused by rapid drying.
3.Improved Flexibility and Durability: The polymer powder enhanced the flexibility of the tile adhesive, enabling it to better absorb stress from temperature changes and substrate deformation, reducing the risk of tile hollowing and detachment.
Effect Evaluation
After a period of use, no hollowing or detachment of tiles was observed on the kitchen and bathroom walls. The water resistance and durability of the tile adhesive were highly recognized by the project team and the client. The addition of redispersible polymer powder significantly improved the overall performance of the tile adhesive, meeting the construction requirements for damp environments.
Conclusion
The application of redispersible polymer powder in tile adhesive not only enhanced the adhesive strength, flexibility, and durability of the tile adhesive but also improved construction performance and extended the open time. This made it better suited for construction needs in complex environments. This case fully demonstrates the application value of redispersible polymer powder in the construction industry.
