Redispersible Polymer Powder for Ceramic Tile Adhesive

Redispersible Polymer Powder for Ceramic Tile Adhesive

The Benefits of Redispersible Polymer Powder for Ceramic Tile Adhesive

Enhanced Adhesion: RDP powder significantly improves the bond strength between the tile adhesive and both the tiles and the substrate.

Improved Water Resistance: RDP powder has excellent water resistance properties. This ensures that the adhesive maintains its bonding effectiveness even in humid environments.

Improved Workability: The addition of RDP powder improves the workability of tile adhesives, making them easier to apply and reducing the effort required during construction.

Increased Flexibility and Crack Resistance: RDP powder imparts greater flexibility to tile adhesives, enabling them to accommodate slight movements and deformations of the substrate.

Enhanced Anti-Slip Properties: Its overall effect is to improve bond strength and stability, thereby reducing tile slippage during the application process.

RDP usage recommendations

1. Routine dosage ranges

  • Ordinary tile adhesive (for indoor use): add 1.5%~3% (according to the total mass of dry powder).Example: For every 100kg of dry powder tile adhesive, add 1.5~3kg of RDP adhesive powder.

  • Large size/heavy tiles (stone, glass tiles, etc.): the dosage can be increased to 3%~5% to enhance adhesion and anti-sagging properties.

  • Special environment (wet area, external wall): 2.5%~4% is recommended, with waterproof additive.

2. Principles of volume adjustment

  • Substrate type: Rough or porous grass-roots level can reduce the dosage appropriately, smooth grass-roots level (e.g. old tile surface) need to increase the dosage.

  • Climatic conditions: high temperature and dry environment can slightly increase the dosage, low temperature and humid environment need to be used in combination with retarder.

  • Formulation balance: RDP adhesive needs to be synergistically proportioned with cellulose ether (e.g., HPMC), cement, sand and other components to avoid excesses that lead to high costs or affect the speed of hardening.

The use of Redispersible Polymer Powder(RDP)

1. Mixing steps

  1. Dry mixing stage: RDP adhesive powder and other dry powder materials (cement, quartz sand, cellulose ether, etc.) are mixed directly and evenly.

    • Key point: Ensure that the dry powder is adequately pre-mixed to avoid agglomeration or uneven dispersion.

  2. Add water and mix: Add water proportionally and mix mechanically until a uniform paste without particles and bubbles.

    • Stirring time: usually 2~3 minutes, leave to cook for 1~2 minutes and then stir for 30 seconds.

2. Construction process

  • Grass-roots treatment: clean, flat, no oil, high water absorption rate of the grass-roots level need to be pre-moistened.

  • Thin-layer method of construction: use a toothed scraper to scrape the tile adhesive into strips, paste and then lightly press to adjust.

  • Open time: RDP adhesive can extend the operable time of tile adhesive to 20~30 minutes (depending on the ambient temperature and humidity).

Notes and Frequently Asked Questions

1. Key considerations

  • Storage conditions: RDP adhesive should be sealed and stored in a cool and dry place to avoid moisture caking (shelf life is usually 6~12 months).

  • Compatibility testing: When changing RDP brands or formulations, small batch tests are required to confirm adhesion and workability.

  • Environmentally friendly: Choose low VOC, non-toxic RDP adhesive powder, especially for indoor construction.

2. Frequently Asked Questions

  • Insufficient bonding:

    • Check that the RDP adhesive has not expired or failed due to moisture.

    • Adjust the ratio of cement to sand (recommended cement:sand = 1:2~1:3).

  • The slurry is too viscous or too thin:

    • Excessive RDP adhesive will cause the slurry to be sticky, requiring a reduction in the amount or an increase in the proportion of sand.

    • If it is too thin, it may be due to insufficient cellulose ether or too much water.

  • The rate of hardening is abnormal:

    • High-temperature environment needs to be matched with retarder, low-temperature environment can be added with early-strengthening agent.

Summary of recommendations

  • Home decoration: ordinary tile adhesive recommended RDP adhesive additions 2% to 3%, preferred well-known brands (such as Wacker, YiLaiTai).

  • Engineering application: strictly according to the design ratio, with anti-slip agent, water-repellent agent and so on.

  • Environmental certification: Preference is given to products that comply with ISO 14001 or Green Building Material certification.
